Between Christmas & New Year’s Day …

The week between Christmas and New Year’s have always been one of my favorites. I used to always take the week off of work – and enjoyed time off of school before that. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever held any responsibilities between the start of Christmas Eve and the last play of the New Years Bowl Games.

Three years ago, just before I was ready to give formal resignation notice at MegaCorp and make my FIRE escape, I wrote about the week between 12/25 and 1/1 being a ‘practice retirement’ of sorts. Mostly, I was enjoying the easy pace and autonomy of this time of year, although I still struggle with when it’s time to stop ‘Christmasing’ and move onto the New Year.

Apparently some people find this a ‘confusing’ week for other reasons and they’ve been tweeting about it. Elite Daily shared some of the perplexed tweeters in this article, where people were confused as to what day it was, whether they needed to change out of their pajamas, or if it was OK to pour themselves a drink at 10am.

Overall, people seem to think the independence and autonomy they surrender the other 51 weeks of the year are “ruining them” or causing them to “wonder what they are doing with their lives.”

Perhaps this humble week stuffed between two big holidays is actually playing an incredibly important role in getting people a taste of the FIRE lifestyle and thinking about what they want to do with their life – not just what the boss needs?

What are you up to this week?

  1. I used to try to take off this week every year when I was working full-time. With the paid holidays, it usually worked out to extra time off with less vac days used to achieve it. Unless I had something important to do, I usually worked Xmas eve as that was almost a freebie with no expectations of much work, eating donuts and leaving early at like 2pm with pay 🙂 Always hard to come back after that much time off and sit in meetings to hear the new rallying cry about all the goals, “improvements” and policy changes we had to start doing in the new year.

    1. There are always a few people that like working this week for the reasons you mention – the days are easy when most everyone else is off. Maybe it would be best to take off the FIRST week of the year and avoid all of the New Year policies & goals!! 😉
