Shoulder Season Travel Time

Summer ended suddenly in the Midwest. We went from 95+ degrees every day on Labor Day weekend, to cool days in the 60s & 70s immediately after. Kids are back in school, our neighborhood pool is closed, and trees are beginning to change color.

With families tied-down with homework, school activities, and Friday Night football games, it is the perfect time to get away for ‘Shoulder Season’ travel. We’re soon to depart for Munich and Oktoberfest!

Despite the 6 million people expected to descend on the Bavarian Capitol over the next 3 weekends, we snagged a Fri/Sat/Sun stay at a nice hotel for a reasonable $300/night. Other stays in Verona & Venice were even more affordable – closer to $150/night.

The drop in EU tourism in September is pretty marked …

As you can see, travel nights spent in Europe drop by almost 40% between August and September. The average daily high temperature chart has almost the same pattern. All together, this is a gift to travelers: less people, lower fares, and cooler weather.

    1. Always fun to be in the Big Apple. I’m trying to talk my wife into seeing the Macy’s Parade there on Thanksgiving.
