What kind of retiree doesn’t play golf? Me, I guess! Despite being the quintessential retiree sport, I’ve been playing less and less.
I was in the garage yesterday and putting things away for winter. When I got to my golf clubs, I realized I hadn’t played at all this year. Not once!
So many people retire to play golf, it’s surprising I am pulling the average down. My newly retired brother plays in a lot of leagues, my retired neighbor is parked up at the golf course almost every day, and my MegaCorp boss built a house on a private course in Pinehurst NC. What am I missing?
I guess I’ve been so busy with other stuff – tennis, curling, softball, hiking/waterfalling, and car events – that I haven’t made time for it. I used to golf at least a couple times a month, but it has gradually gone away. (This year was also impacted by the Achilles Tendonitis I’ve been nursing).
I think the biggest thing keeping my away from the course is that my buddies don’t golf. Golfing is a social activity and I don’t have a golfing social group. Even if I did, the last couple times I played, I was so out of practice that I played terrible. It’s not surprising I didn’t get an invite to return!
How much golfing do you do in retirement?
