Today is ‘National Relaxation Day’. It’s recorded in Chase’s Calendar of Annual Events, after being proposed by Chase’s 9-year old grandson, Sean Moeller, in 1985.
I celebrated the day by mowing the lawn. For me, that’s pretty relaxing. After all, I’ve had a busy week.
On Monday we played pickle ball. Tuesday was a 37-mile bike ride – my longest ever. Wednesday I played tennis – although not very well.
Today I slept in to 10:00a and mostly took it easy – mowing the lawn and tinkering in some things around the house.
What’s a relaxing day for you?

Sleeping in until 10:00, WOW! I don’t think I have slept past 7:00 in decades, but then again it is rare for me to see 10:00 pm.
My relaxation is sitting on the balcony or deck chair of a small cruise ship with a drink in hand admiring the scenery. Either wide open ocean or last year the shores of the Nile River.
Given that I am retired, I actually find reviewing documents on consulting projects relaxing. Most of my project work is flat fee thus I don’t need to track my time and there are occasions when I follow issues down a rabbit hole due to interest. That makes for a lower hourly rate, but it doesn’t matter as I enjoy it.
My late father used to say that in retirement putting the snowblower away for the summer or the lawn mower away for the winter took much longer. Why? As an engineer, he took pleasure reading the entire manual!

I’m usually up between 8-8:30a, but sometimes I gotta sleep in 7a is much too early for me!
We love cruising. Especially when the drink package is included! Doing the Danube next year for our first River cruise.
When my Dad retired he recalled putting the snow plow on his lawn tractor. “It took longer than it should, but I didn’t care. It was weird that I didn’t have to care anymore.” 🙂

My favorite way to tour Europe is via a Eurail Pass because it allows more time at each stop. Last time our family went to Europe for six weeks we took overnight sleeper trains from Paris to Rome and from Milan to Munich. Something I always wanted to do from watching James Bond movies.
I don’t like short fixed schedules. Four hours in Athens, check. Four hours in Mykonos, check. Four hours in Dubrovnik, check.
Several days at each stop is more my pace. After taking the overnight train to Munich, we were able to take our time getting around. Got to check out the beer gardens, Dachua and museums in Munich. Went to Andech’s Monastery which has been brewing beer for longer than the US has been settled. Went to Mainz and on up to Sankt Goar and caught a small river ship and went up the Rhine River that was included in our days Eurail fare. Visited local wineries along the Rhine. Then went to Nuremberg.

What’s fun about traveling at your own pace is seeing all the “in between places” that the big tour groups miss. I could do both. It’s nice being in your own, but it’s also nice unpacking once and not having to figure everything out yourself.

I am an engineer myself and am taking on projects around the house and my family vehicle fleet. It is stimulating learning how things work and fixing rather than replacing, often for pennies on the dollar. YouTube has some excellent videos where some very skilled people teach you their trade. I recommend watching these types of videos, even if you are going to hire out the work, because being an informed consumer will help assure a better outcome.
Being retired means having the time and funds to do things the right way instead of corner cutting. Sure beats having an MBA or Business School trained Project Manager constantly status checking with, “How long until we get there?”
