Pickleball & Tennis

This is the first full summer that we have played pickleball regularly. We first played a couple years ago, but had only done it a half-dozen times until 2024.

This year, we joined a park recreational group. They have open, pick-up games every morning. They play on new courts built within one of our city’s many outdoor hockey rinks.

We also just joined leagues at an indoor pickleball club. For $15/week you get 3 hours of ladder play through Thanksgiving. It’s fun – and a real workout.

I recently compared 2 hours of singles tennis with 2 hours of doubles pickleball. The daytime leagues are filled with athletic retirees. Both are an amazing hit similar workout …

I think most tennis players would be surprised at how comparably good exercise that pickleball is. Pickleball has a smaller court, but it makes up for less moving around with more, faster activity.

How popular is pickleball in your area? Have you tried it out yet?

  1. We live in central Texas and pickleball is very popular. I play regularly and always assumed it was not as hard as a workout as tennis. It’s great to know you can get just as good as a workout. I feel like pickleball is a little more social than tennis because of the smaller court.

    1. Agree – with tennis, you have to shout to the person on the other baseline to hear you. Pickleball lends itself to more banter.
