School Night Concerts

We went to 5 concerts in the last 5 weeks and they have all been outside … and terrific. It’s warmest in August in Minnesota, but that makes the evenings perfect for being outside.

⁃ Rick Springfield – MN Rib Fest

⁃ Minneapolis Symphony – @ Bandshell

⁃ The Jayhawks – @ Bandshell

⁃ Rare Form – Local Faves

⁃ Duran Duran – State Fair

I think only one of the concerts was actually on a weekend. It’s SO nice to be able to go to a show and not worry about it being a ‘school night’.

When we got home late from Duran Duran last Thursday night (almost midnight) we slept in to 9:30a the next morning. Fantastic.

What’s the latest you’ve been out on a school night lately? How late did you sleep in?

  1. My wife and I went the Greek Theater a couple months ago to see Dwight Yoakum and Emmylou Harris on a Thursday night. We thought the concert was Emmylou singing with Dwight. Instead, they had an excellent warm-up band that featured 90s Country Music. Emmylou came out at 8:00 pm and gave her whole concert. My wife and I were starting to worry that we would get shortchanged by Dwight Yoakum, who was our main draw. He came out at 10:00 pm and boy did he put on a show. Constant music with limited talking, for song after song. My neighbor counted 40 songs.

The concert ended around midnight. By the time we got out of the parking area, drove home, and unwound, we ended up going to bed around 2:30 AM. I got up around 9:30 AM. As a parting comment, the average age at the show was probably mid-60s.

    1. 10p – that is a late start for the headliner! Is the Greek Theater the one near the Griffith Park Observatory? We parked there once. Looked like an amazing amphitheater.

      1. Yes, you have the right one in mind. Really nice music venue. Great scenery and great weather. Big enough to draw some fairly big names, but small enough that any seat is closer than a cheap seat in other venues.

We just saw Chicago there a couple weeks ago on Saturday night. The next night LA was hit by a storm that brought us 3 inches of rain in August which is very rare. The rain policy at the Greek is bring your raincoat.

      2. Pretty rare that they get a rainout in the summer in LA, isn’t it? I think the Dodgers went decades without one.

  2. Klaus I wish that I would have seen that Emmylou and Dwight concert. I saw Emmylou at the Coachhouse in San Juan Capistrano thirty plus years ago and Dwight at Buck Owens Palace in Bakersfield with Buck. I don’t go to concerts anymore as I don’t stay up that late and I don’t like to stand for hours.

The last concert we saw was Bruce Springsteen at the Sports Arena at his and the venues next to the last show before demolition. Had to stand the entire time in order to see as everyone was standing

    1. I hear you on the standing – I look for seats in the first row of the balcony/club level or the bar rail so that I don’t have to stand if I do t want to!

    2. Dave, you need to give the Greek Theater a try. The seats are terraced, so that my wife and I felt no need to stand. You could also hire an Uber driver to take you to and from the event to reduce the walking and avoid driving late at night when you are tired.

    3. One other comment about Emmylou and Dwight. Dwight attributed Emmylou for giving him his first big break when she let him open for her at the Universal Theater. I think the Greek only holds 4,500 which is in the sweet spot of being big enough to attract some good names, yet not to big where there are the worst seat in the house is still not bad. Have you ever tried the Greek?
