Now that we bought a vacation place in Florida, will we fly off to any other adventures?
We have one group of friends that bought a second home in Florida and said that it consumed the entirety of their future travel budget. Another snowbirding couple we know still plans an overseas trip every fall.
Travel has been a big part of our early retirement. We’ve done 6 big overseas trips in 8 years (despite the pandemic). We went to Germany & Italy last fall, but don’t have plans for another big overseas excursion until Spring of 2025.
I’m not sure how the new Florida condo will affect our thinking, travel-wise, but it did cause me to stop and reflect on this interesting list I saw this list online recently. It’s a ranking of the most historically interesting places to travel to. (The source was US News & World Report, but it didn’t show their criteria for making the list).

It seems like a pretty well-considered list, although I would have worked a Nordic country or two into the list. As you can see from my green marks, we’ve hit 19/40 countries – in fact 14 of the top 20.
That’s pretty good, but I don’t want my world travels to stall now that we have our own place in the Sunshine State. We’ll pick up Hungary & Croatia next year, but hopefully that won’t be the last trip for a long time.
How many of these countries have you been to? Which others do you think should be on the list?

On your list Croatia and Ireland are nice. It will be interesting to see what happens in Argentina during this next couple years. I used to go there on business, and socialism with continuous currency devaluations really hurt the country. Panama is an interesting turnaround case. In the early 1980s they were very cheap and corrupt. They are now rated as one of the best expat retirement destinations, especially in the mountains region in Chiriquí which looks kind of Swiss.

It’s amazing how quickly countries that are completely fiscally fouled-up can get thing turned around. It looks like Javier is off to a good start in ARG. Maybe we can get Rand Paul as Minority Leader for the GOP Senate.
