Comfortable Weather Re-Examined …

A few weeks ago I wrote a post on the places in the USA with the “most comfortable” weather.  Many retirees are looking for a place to plant themselves with sunny skies, pleasant temperatures, and low humidity.  Coastal California leads the country, but the analysis of Florida didn’t look quite right to me.

The chart said Central Florida – where we just bought a vacation condo – only has about 50 nice days a year.  The same as our home state of Minnesota.  That didn’t feel right.

It turns out, the chart was created with some very restrictive parameters. In the interest of setting the record state, I re-ran the analysis myself with the tools on MyPerfectWeather.com.

First, Central Florida has about 200 nice days a year … except in the warm weather months, when it is too warm, too sticky … and sometimes hurricane prone (talking about you, Helene!).

Lake Buena Vista, FL

Second, my home state of Minnesota has fewer nice days (~145), but they are exactly contra-seasonal to Florida …

Minneapolis, MN

That gives us a good run of the year, shuffling back in forth from MN to FL.  Combined, we can find about 345 days – 95% of the year – if we put ourselves in the right place.  That’s the dual-climate solution we’ve been looking for.

I also ran a couple other places.  Here’s Los Angeles – perfect practically every day of the year!

Los Angeles, CA

And, Beaufort SC, where my brother and his wife just bought a place to escape Minnesota …

Beaufort, SC

I don’t have a snappy question to end this post with, I just wanted to update the thoughts from my original post.

If you are in Florida – prayers for you dealing with Hurricane Helene. Looks very serious this morning!

  1. The perfect weather band varies from person to person. As long as it isn’t raining or windy with a warm sun, I find any temperature above the high 50s acceptable. My litmus test is do I need to wear long trousers today.

    1. Agree – On Monday morning, it was 42 degrees here in MN. I put in jeans to walk the dog at 8am. It was the first time I’ve worn long pants in many, many months!
