How’s Your Miles Per Coffee?

My uncle posted this meme online this morning. I don’t drink coffee, but I sometimes think I would enjoy starting to. My wife seems very relaxed in the morning having her coffee cup in hand – and it gives her a boost to get going.

Despite not taking in much caffeine, I do move a lot. My Apple watch says that I walked 1,343.2 miles last year, which is +49% (1.5x) greater than the “average human”. That’s pretty good, but honestly I thought I would be a bit higher.

I tacked on another 654 miles biking in 2025. ChatGPT says the average American only bikes about 50 miles a year, so that’s a big difference (13x). Yes, my bike is an eBike, but mine is a Class 1 type that requires you to pedal to get a boost.

I can’t think of anything I else that I do that adds up to any significant mileage beyond what is captured in walking & biking. I don’t ski enough and I haven’t skateboarded in quite some time.

Maybe I need to start drinking coffee to up my numbers!

How much of a coffee / caffeine drinker are you? Are you getting a good miles / gallon number?

  1. I drink two cups per day, which works out to 45 gallons per year. I am walking at least 2 miles per day with my dogs which works out to 730 miles per yea, so multiply by 150% to capture the walking I am doing without my cell phone for a total of 1,095 per year. 1095 miles / 45 gallons= 24.3 MPG. I am a modern SUV driving on the open highway.

    1. You are about equal to my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. It gets 24 mpg. Unfortunately, ChatGPT says that home-brewed coffee is much more expensive than gasoline! ⛽️ 😆 👟

      1. I make huge Cuban expresso shots that are around a cup each and our family drinks around five cups per day. Let’s estimate that I get five days out a package, so each package makes around 40 cups. 40 divided by 16 equals 2.5 gallons per package. La Llave Cuban Expresso is going for $10 per pack today. $10 dividend by 2.5 equals $4 per gallon. I just filled up yesterday and paid $5.25 per gallon before applying a $1 per gallon Ralph’s discount.

Home brewed and expresso shots are a bargain. I am getting 40 servings for around the cost of three servings at Starbucks. The ChatGPT Math is wrong for The People’s Republic of California because Governor Newscum just caused two refineries representing about 20% of the states production to shutter their facilities and chased Chevron out of state to Texas. We also have the Iran situation which spiked prices.

Our gasoline prices have recently increased over $1 per gallon. But since both the Iran situation and oil major exodus from California happened at the same time, I don’t know how much each event impacted the price. Of course, the Demonrats are blaming Trump’s Iran as the sole cause with the hope that voters forget Governor Newscum chased two refineries out of business or an oil major to leave the state entirely. Have you noticed a change in gasoline prices in MN?

      2. We’re in Florida right now. I paid $4.59/gallon for premium late last week. Regular was $3.79.

I don’t usually pay too much attention to gas prices, but these were pretty high, so I took a photo.

I would say prices are up about $1 a gallon since we got here right after New Year’s. Our prices here are pretty in line with the National averages reported by AAA …
