Tropical Summerland

A week ago, we drove 1,550 miles from MN to FL to drop off a vehicle at our new vacation condo. My trusty SUV is being retired to Florida – so that we can just fly down whenever we want and have some wheels here.

We got arrived in the Sunshine State last Friday and it’s a good thing our SUV’s air conditioner is well-charged. The daily high temperatures have been between 94-98 degrees every day.

Yesterday topped out at 100 … !

Again, we’re from Minnesota. We hit the Century mark about once every 3 years, on average. While we love the warmth of the Florida ‘Winter Summerland’ – for Snowbirding – we didn’t buy a vacation place for ‘Fun in the 100-Degree Sun!’

Still, we are adjusting to the heat. This means doing as many outdoors things as possible in the morning: walking the dog, going for a bike ride, or zipping over to the Disney Parks.

We’ve mostly reserved our afternoons for inside stuff: projects around the house, grocery shopping, or errands. Yesterday, I drove over to Tampa Bay and saw the Rays game – inside the air-conditioned dome of Tropicana Field (my 31st MLB ballpark).

After about 5pm, our neighborhood starts getting shady. Our neighborhood clubhouse has a great pool with seating areas out of the sun. Even the water is mostly shaded. We’ve also gone out for patio dinners and saw our first lighted drone show the other night at Disney Springs.

We’re getting by with the heat, but certainly seeing the limitations of this place for summer. While we know many people who have moved down here year round – and dealt with the heat with no problems – our MN weather is too nice between June-September for us to want to spend much time baking down here for 4 months.

We’ll come back down in the fall and spend a few weeks in Florida between October & November. Then, we’ll be back down in the winter. How do you split your time between your primary residence and vacation place (if you have one)?
