Signs Someone is Rich …

I recently saw an interesting thread that discussed “How Can You Tell Someone Is Rich?”  That is, what are the signs that someone has money, even if you just met them? It caught my attention because high on the list was “they retired from work in their 40s”.

Here are some of the responses that people said suggest someone is rich …

  • They never complain about how much something costs.
  • They say, “We’re comfortable” or “Very blessed”.
  • Nice white teeth – “one of the best indicators of wealth & health”.
  • Simple clothing but always looks brand new.  New shoes, too.
  • All their shades of black and gray clothing fit perfectly and no brand labels.
  • A certain ease in their attitude.
  • They have original artwork on the walls in their house.
  • Never showing off or worrying about paying for anything.
  • They don’t have a job, but instead own a business with many employees.
  • They have the latest gadgets, but don’t always know how to work them.
  • If they have a “Lake House” or “Summer House” and still travel a lot.
  • Never talk about their mortgage or bills – everything is paid off.
  • If they have an expensive hobby like sailing or horses.
  • Make quick decisions to spend money instead of spending time in lines.
  • Expensive pair of sunglasses in each of several cars.
  • They don’t look for coupon or promo codes.
  • Live in a large house – have a lawn service, housekeeper, and/or nanny.
  • Regularly attend pro sports games, concerts, or Broadway musicals.
  • They don’t wear expensive suits or Rolexes.
  • Pay for hotels in the heart of big cities, not in the outskirts.
  • Own a Mercedes or Porsche, but not a Ferrari or flashy car.
  • “Matching socks!”
  • “They use Grey Poupon mustard!”

In general, these responses reflect the idea that “Money Talks, Wealth Whispers”.  Obviously there will always be people richer than you and poorer than you – I’m not one to go overboard with fancy things, but I’m sure it’s not hard to figure out that we are “living comfortably”.

What would you add to the list?

  1. They have an innate ability to hold a conversation with anyone without making the other person feel uncomfortable.

Politicians are best at this. I had the opportunity to spray for mosquitos at Ed Muskies place in Kennebunkport not long after he stepped down as Secretary of State. His place was inland on the river as opposed to the Bush compound. When we were done he brought us lemonade and chatted, I think he might have been lonely.

Bill Clinton also has that gift.

I know many who have had a lot of interaction with Stephen King who they say is the most unpretentious and nice person you will ever meet.

The common theme I have observed with wealthy people versus rich is that when the wealthy are around mortals in an environment that is not luxurious, they really get relaxed and enjoy people. The rich don’t leave luxury and tend to remain in a heightened state of competition against who can out-rich the other.

The wealthy don’t care how they measure up. They have arrived and have no need to compete.

    1. The true character of a politician shows when the camera isn’t on and they are not in public and the way they treat those around them. Such as their mosquito sprayer.

    1. Interesting … “In some developing countries, displaying wealth can result in you being nabbed off the street and held for ransom.” Yikes!

      1. In LA they have had follow home robberies where the perps follow person home who are wearing jewelry and driving fancy cars. LA even has robbery tourism, where burglars fly up from Chile, knock off a string of houses and then fly back home.

      3. One of the drivers behind this lawlessness was a Soros supported DA George Gascón who didn’t prosecute bad guys. He was just voted out late fall of last year and was replaced by Nathan Hochman. The new DA, who just got in office made very public announcements that he was going to throw the book at looters and scammers who targeted Palisades and Altadena fire victims.

      4. We have one of the Soros-backed DAs in Minneapolis/Hennepin County … Mary Moriarty. She’s a real darling of the Minnesota Prigressives.
