We’re in “back & forth” season right now. As the daily temperatures drop in Minnesota, we’ve started to go back and forth to our vacation place in Florida.
We just got back from a week in Florida and will be down there again in November & December. In January, we’ll be in full snowbird mode.
Wherever we are, people ask us if we’ve become Florida residents yet. Since MN has one of the highest tax burdens and FL one of the lowest (including NO income tax), it’s a popular topic. Now that we have all of our flights booked for the year, I plotted out our locations for 2026 in a pie chart …

As you can see, we have about a 60/40 split. We would need to shift another month (~32 days) out of MN to begin to argue that our “domicile” has moved out of the state.
Where you spend most of your year is the first of 26 different considerations MN assesses before you escape their high taxes. They will actually fight you to get your tax money if your residency case isn’t good enough.
I think we’ll tip toward Florida at some point in the next few years. Right now we’ve been living off cash savings, so we’re not really paying much (if any) Minnesota income tax right now anyway. If we start selling some investments, the extra month in Florida will be well-worth the shift.
