Christmas Time At MegaCorp

December is always a crazy month in the office. I had the fortune of visiting MegaCorp yesterday and be reminded of what an unusual month it is. It had been quite a while since I had been back in the old digs.

I saw the daily calendar printout of one of the people I was meeting with. He was back-to-back with 8 or 9 meetings from early morning to the end of the day. I remember days like those! With just a couple weeks before the Christmas/New Year’s holidays, everyone is jamming as many meetings into their calendars as they can.

In addition, many businesses schedule special events / holiday parties – on top of all the special events / holiday parties that are being scheduled outside of work! It is certainly the month of the year where there are not enough hours in the day.

His assistant was telling me how busy everyone has been at the same time she was looking forward to the end of the month – when the office practically shuts down with so many people on vacation. She was looking forward to the peace and quiet of being at home and enjoying time with family. “It will be like being retired!” she said – perhaps unaware of why I left MegaCorp a few years ago.

That’s December. Three weeks of crazy business at work, followed by two weeks of relaxing vacation at home. It is a strange juxtaposition- working as hard as you can, right up to the point where you relax. It’s kind of like dieting all day, so you can indulge in a big box of Christmas treats before bedtime. That’s not a bad idea, come to think of it! 🙂

    1. We used to get big boxes of candy and cookies from suppliers this time of year at the office! That was pretty cool to have so many treats in the office – and bring some home for Christmas vacation. 🙂

    1. I had an interesting job, and enjoyed a great deal. That said, nothing beats the freedom and autonomy of a life of FIRE!

  1. I always enjoyed the Holiday season at megacorp. My boss gave a great holiday party at his home. It was quite a drive for all of us to get there, so we carpooled and the drive out was just a part of our holiday fun. I also remember a holiday lunch I attended where the 6 of us really did not want to go as we did not really like each other. However, we were given the afternoon off after the lunch so we all went. Much to our surprise we discovered that we really did all like each other, we stayed at the restaurant chatting it up until 3:00 p.m. Someone’s hubby called to make sure she was okay as she had said she’d be home by 1:00 p.m. That lunch changed the way we worked together for the next few years. I still chuckle about that lunch, we all thought we didn’t like each other, discovered that we did and we actually discussed it and ended up friends.
