Sorry I missed my Monday deadline this week. I was on the road to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a buddy. The Speedway was on the line of totality for the solar eclipse! The eclipse was amazing. And, a bit haunting. The cold, black disk of the moon staring down on the darkened Earth is really chilling. Very cosmic & otherworldly. It is no surprise … Continue reading Quirky, Cosmic Trip
We went to the Hollywood FL Hard Rock Casino this weekend to check out the Guitar Hotel. While we were there, I put a bet down on my Green Bay Packers – who easily covered the 10.5 point spread, despite losing to the 49ers. You can bet on all the games at the Hard Rock Sports Book: NFL, NCAA, NBA, NHL, and MLB. One thing … Continue reading Betting The White House?
What kind of retiree doesn’t play golf? Me, I guess! Despite being the quintessential retiree sport, I’ve been playing less and less. I was in the garage yesterday and putting things away for winter. When I got to my golf clubs, I realized I hadn’t played at all this year. Not once! So many people retire to play golf, it’s surprising I am pulling the … Continue reading Out Of The Swing …
We’ve spent the last few weeks working on clearing out my wife’s father’s house. He passed away earlier this year. Let me tell you, the man had a lot of coins! I wrote earlier about his collection of valuable coins, but he also had a lot of ‘everyday small change’. I would estimate that they add up to about 2-3 coffee cans worth. To give … Continue reading Small Change
I asked my AI illustrator app to picture 77 pints of beer on a bar top, but I think it went a little overboard with this image. I can relate. After a couple years of buying ‘Pub Passes’ and ‘Tap Room Passports’, I now have THREE of them to use in 2023. Those three books entitle me to a total of 77 ‘free’ beers after … Continue reading 77 Pints of Beer on the Bar
I have a friend who owns a car repair / body shop here in Minnesota who is enjoying a bumper crop of business from nasty potholes this spring. The roads are in such bad shape that you can see the old bricks & streetcar tracks poking through the broken pavement (upper right photo) near his shop, even though the trolley service ended almost 70 years … Continue reading Epic Potholes!
I never planned on making any money off of this blog or monetizing the traffic in any way. Still, if it had exploded into millions of readers and I received a 8-figure offer to buy it, this is the kind of place I would have wasted some of that money on … a real fire station! This one is for sale in the French Quarter … Continue reading The Real Mr. Fire Station
Happy Twixtmas! Twixtmas? Yes, the time “betwixt” Christmas/Hanukkah & New Years. Say it to yourself in a haughty English accent and it might sound authentic … Twixtmas). Twixtmas is the latest way to describe the extended holiday season, formerly known as “Christmas Break”. It’s the time when many people are off work, or work demands slow dramatically because so many others are out of the … Continue reading Happy / Merry Twixtmas!
About 10 years ago, I was one of those goofballs you see on the evening news waiting outside a store at midnight around Black Friday for the “big new thing”. Our son was excited for the debut of the Nintendo Wii U game console that was being released that night. I got there at about 9:30 PM and waited for the store to open for … Continue reading Not A Video Gamer
I took Thanksgiving weekend off from writing, but thought I would share this funny bit I saw posted on Reddit recently. It’s perfect for framing life in the ‘slow lane’ of early retirement… An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly an Eurofighter with a Tempo Mach 2 appears. The pilot of … Continue reading Slower, Older, and Smarter
